UCMed Diabetes Center Earns “Clinic of Competence” Seal

Recognition highlights accessible, patient-focused care in Cebu

The University of Cebu Medical Center (UCMed) continues to make strides in specialized healthcare as its Diabetes and Nutrition Center (DNC) has been officially named a “Clinic of Competence.”

The distinction was awarded by the Philippine Center for Diabetes Education Foundation, Inc. (PCDEF, Diabetes Center Philippines), affirming that UCMed’s DNC meets the foundation’s rigorous criteria for high-quality diabetes management and education.

A Standard of Excellence

The certification confirms that the center’s protocols, services, and overall approach are ethically grounded, evidence-based, and aligned with national best practices. It also highlights the expertise and commitment of the center’s diverse medical team.

PCDEF has long led the nationwide effort to train Diabetes Educators and establish effective programs in response to the growing number of Filipinos affected by diabetes.

DNC unit head Dr. April Melody Abcede, MD, received the recognition from PCDEF President Dr. Augusto D. Litonjua, MD, during the National Assembly of Diabetes Educators held on November 11, 2025, at the Makati Diamond Residences.

A Trusted Center for Diabetes Care

UCMed is one of only two hospitals in Cebu to receive this certification—an achievement that underscores its vital role as a dependable center for diabetes care and patient education in the Visayas.

“This recognition fuels our drive to grow, innovate, and elevate what the DNC has already achieved,” said Dr. Abcede.

UCMed Medical Director Dr. Armando V. Tan, MD, noted that the milestone reflects the hospital’s dedication to its guiding vision: “Your Health, Our Priority.”

“Being named a ‘Clinic of Competence’ is more than an accolade,” he said. “It represents our commitment to delivering diabetes care that is both scientifically sound and deeply compassionate. For us, competence means continually pushing the standards higher so our patients can live longer, healthier lives.”

Nearly a Decade of Dedicated Service

Established in 2016 through the leadership of Dr. Cherrie Gail Gonzalez, the DNC was built with a clear goal: to position UCMed as a major hub for diabetes care. Since then, the center has journeyed closely with persons with diabetes, offering support throughout their treatment and lifestyle changes.

The recognition further strengthens UCMed’s mission to prevent and manage diabetes and its related complications, said lead diabetes dietitian educator Joshua David Bendoy.

“Our team of Diabetes Educators—composed of physicians, nurses, and dietitians—provides comprehensive self-management education, individualized counseling, and guidance on proper nutrition and meal planning,” Bendoy shared.

As it approaches its 10th year, the UCMed DNC remains committed to delivering enhanced, accessible, and affordable diabetes care to the community.
